Functioning and innovative logistics which are also becoming increasingly decisive in competitiveness, will be more important than ever in the future in a globalised economy based on the division of labour.

It is, therefore, important to create a mutual knowledge basis between industry and science to recognise vertical and horizontal synergies and create an effective innovation transfer which will lead to a positive economic and investment climate.

The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economics has, therefore, announced a competition for the creation and development of a state-wide logistics network.

The winner will have the opportunity to submit an application for EU funding to the Ministry of Economics. Funding of up to 500,000 euros from the European Regional Development Fund (RCE-ERDF) is available. There will be no right of granting.

Entitled to apply are legal persons subject to public or private law who are not orientated towards making a profit (e.g. chambers, associations, business development companies, registered associations or similar institutions). The applicant must be based in Baden-Württemberg.

The targets and conditions that should be achieved with the state-wide logistics network are listed in the notification of competition.

As part of the project description, a feasible, long term concept must be presented which incorporates the creation, development and operation of a logistics network (also going beyond the funding period). The duties, targets, measures as well as the organisation of the logistics network must be described.

The closing date for project suggestions was 9th July 2010.

Competition winner

The Kooperationszentrum Logistik e.V in Kornwestheim and its partners won the competition  and are now eligible to apply for EU funding at the Ministry of Economics  to develop a state-wide logistics network.

Two concepts, which were both worthy of an award, were submitted before the closing date. One concept was submitted by the Traffic and Logistics Centre (CVL), a new association of the Cooperative State University Mannheim; the other came from the Kooperationszentrum Logistik (KLOK), a centre of excellence of the Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corporation.

To help promote synergies, both participants were give the option of presenting a joint concept to exploit the greatest possible potential for a long term state-wide logistics network which will create and secure workplaces and promote Baden-Württemberg as a site for logistics.

In the resulting joint concept which also incorporated the activities and content of the CVL concept, the partners agreed that KLOK would organise the project in the future. Offices in  Kornwestheim and Mannheim are planned.
