Dual university system in Baden-Württemberg (DHBW)

Tried and tested dual study format

The dual university study system is a practically oriented alternative to a solely university-based course of study. It allows school leavers to achieve an internationally recognized Bachelor degree based on a dual course of study. The universities of cooperative education formed an alliance as dual universities on 01.03.2009.( Press release MWK).

A school leaver at a dual university is, on the one hand, a student of a state university of cooperative education and, on the other, has a contractual training agreement with a company for the entire three year study period.

The program consists of theoretical and practically oriented phases of training, which alternate on a 12-week cycle.

While completing the study program, the students gain an intimate understanding of the company and also learn to manage their finances thanks to their contractually agreed salary.

Since the contractual relationship lasts several years, the company gets to know the strengths of its student workers and if the student is offered a job after his or her course is complete, any settling-in period will be significantly shortened.

Usually, graduates of the dual university system are employed by the company that trained them directly after their study is complete.

There are currently 20,000 trainees from 5000 companies studying in the dual university system in Baden-Württemberg.
