The logistics sector is a service sector covering the entire range of industry and it is essential for ensuring that materials and information can flow efficiently along global supply chains. The modern logistics sector provides the economy with a wide range of services which are often bundled to increase cost efficiency, thus helping to keep our economy competitive.

The range of services provided includes the storage, packaging and labelling of goods, as well as bundling and numerous other upstream or downstream assembly or processing stages in the areas of production, procurement, waste disposal and in the commercial sector.

The logistics sector is now the third most important industry in Baden–Württemberg

In 2007 the core industry earned, according to the present data of the Business Register, in nearly 18,000 businesses a turnover of €33,4 billion. The Statistics of the Federal Employment Office show that in 2009 almost 180,000 people have been employed. In terms of its economic importance, it is the third most important industry after mechanical engineering and automotive construction. Baden–Württemberg also serves as a transit point and source for major flows of goods.

To ensure that Baden–Württemberg continues to develop positively as an industrial location, general awareness of the close link between a strong logistics sector and the prosperity of our industry is very important. The logistics sector is an important engine for growth, a major plus point of our regional economy and makes an important contribution to securing jobs in the service and production sectors.

This logistics portal for Baden–Württemberg provides information on the specific strengths of our state and regions in the logistics sector and gives a compact overview of the logistics sector of the State of Baden–Württemberg.
